Greetings from the mountans of Virginia

I just wanted to pop in and introduce myself to all of you, fellow fossil lovers. I'm a tech geek by day, but my heart belongs to the great outdoors and all things geological. Recently, I've caught the fossil-hunting bug, and I couldn't be more excited to dive into this world headfirst!

I'm a total newbie to fossil collecting, but I'm eager to learn from the best! I can't wait to share discoveries, swap tips, and plan future fossil-hunting trips. I'm located in the mountains of southwestern Virginia.

My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs.

Welcome to the Fossil Forum.  Virginia in general is good for fossils, but the mountains have a wide variety of Paleozoic (Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Mississippian, and Pennsylvanian) fossils.  The book by Jasper Burns (Fossil collecting in the mid-Atlantic States) is a good place to start with suggestions for collecting sites, although some of the sites are defunct due to road changes (eliminating road cuts) or access issues such as private property closures, so some exploring is necessary.  Roughly where are you located?

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

I'm in the western part of the state, near the tri-point of Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, in the mountains.

Thanks for the book recommendation; I'll certainly check it out!

Welcome from Maryland! It sounds like I’ll be down in your area in the fall. I’ll be heading down to visit my parents in Marion and it’s gotta be pretty close to your stomping grounds. Maybe we could meet up for a day to go see what we can find around there.
