Gmr Yesterday

Decent trip. Found a 3.5" meg that except for the worn serrations is a good one for GMR. A perfect 2" great white, some makos, and an alligator scute. Was a beautiful warm day and was nice to get out.

Great finds Rick, Nice day to have went out, I need to get down there soon and try to enjoy some of this false spring weather....I have to also find some places closer to the house to get to if nothing more than some nice shell fossils...You have those GW's figured out in there too. Nice osterderm/skute and cool meg from there ....Looking forward to maybe getting up with you and Don when we can get the chance...Jeff/Tarheel

Absolutely Jeff. I have limited time right now, but early March I have several days off and I will surely be out there during that time.

It's an okay meg. Serrations are barely there. Funny because a little while back I found one that was absolutely perfect except for missing a large corner part of the root. This one has a full root, but not the perfect serrations. Always something!

I agree on the hunt. Let me know.

I didn't know you could find complete Megs at GMR. Do they come out of the same layer as the GW teeth? I've seen pictrures of the banks there and it looks like shells in the banks at some points.

The meg teeth are mostly reworked and a complete meg is extremely rare. Most people who find a complete GMR meg have put in thousands of hours in searching there, or are just completely lucky and find one laying out after a hurricane/huge storm. Best to look other places if your searching for a meg.

DO, or do not. There is no try.

I agree as well! Ha ha. Dont forget about me! Hmm, wait let me rethink that. I'd be flanked by the two people who have found the largest GMR great whites I have ever seen. Not to mention, the largest great white from anywhere Ive ever seen. Dang, digging with you guys, I'd really have to bring my game face.

Ya, you should see the one MikeDTOB found last year just laying in the stream. I think it was over 4" or more.

Daryl.

Yeah Daryl saw them at the fossil festival. The worst part was, I took a friend up there, who wasnt new to fossil hunting, but first time to GMR, and I found two megs that day. Which is unbelievably lucky. I felt bad though and explained several times that that really doesnt happen at all. The smaller (3 7/8") was from screening, and it came out on top of the shovel and I said "Hey look at that" and then dumped it in my screen. The larger (5 1/8"), was just laying in the stream by some leaves and behind some big rocks. I at first thought it was another leaf waving in the water, but when I got up to it, it was just algae on the top of it waving. Definitely a rare and awesome day there. The other complete meg I found from there, came out in matrix. I was about to throw the mass back in the water because it was 90 percent encased in matrix, but I noticed the bottom serrations sticking out, and at the top could make out the outline of the root lobes. So I took it home, dried it out and removed the matrix which wasnt an easy job. I cant wait to get back there and do some more searching.

Hey Rick, Tarheel, that one guy who dug with us that day, was that his first day in the creek, and he found an awesome meg. Talk about luck.

Daryl are you coming back down for the fossil festival this year?

DO, or do not. There is no try.
