piranha
When you finally capture the beast it will be a moment to enjoy forever. Please find it soon or we might have to change your screen name to Captain Ahab. Ultimately it will matter not, as others have pointed out, your prized catch awaits patiently within the shale. Hmmm... if fishes were wishes... or should wishes be fishes? PS: Congrats on all of the fantastic fossils from the weekend
Fossildude19
Thank you for the encouragement, Scott. I apprecitate it. You're right, of course - success will be that much sweeter. Interesting, what did that Red Queen do to that fish? quartz? calcite? Whenever I'm splitting rock, for leaf fossils, I feel like I'm gambling. My heart races a bit as the shale splits.... Did I win the prize!....Than a sad gut feeling ,Ohhh bummer almost!......But ever once in a while.. Jackpot!! ..A complete nice specimen! It just keeps ya coming back For more.. squali
Tim, seriously, you have collected some beautiful specimens displaying intricate details that are not common in a lot of 'whole' fish specimens. Perhaps a spot of tea sacrificed for the madd hatter will save your head It's coming It's hard to remember why you drained the swamp when your surrounded by alligators. siteseer
Tim, That is just some weird bad luck. The fish are just long enough not to come out complete. There are spots around Carmel, California where you can find Late Miocene pea crab impressions. At the same sites, you can find impressions of leaves, forams, bivalves (Arca sp.), bony fish scales and vertebrae (even an occasional complete fish) but the "whale" longtime collectors want to land as a large, undescribed crab (also an impression) about the size of a big potato. You can find partials of it but they always seem to extend from the weathered end of a chunk. On my last trip a couple of years ago, I dug out part of a body with a nice arm and claw (my best specimen of that ever) so I understand being happy with a relatively substantial partial at a site where you're lucky to get that much. You did your homework and you've put in your time. You're overdue for something extraordinary for the site. Jess Another fish tail... Possibly a Semionotus sp. I like to think that I am ever closer to a complete, well preserved fish, and feel it can't be too much longer before the odds have worked into my favor. Of course persistence and hard work help to close the gap. Fossildude19
So, it has been found! Splitting some shale last night, I found this one. Complete fish #3 !! Not as well preserved as the first partial, but complete! Thanks John - consider the whistle wet! Redfieldius gracilis, Early Jurassic, Shuttle Meadow Fm. CT. Pectoral, pelvic, anal, and dorsal fins are all present. There may be some more of the head under the shale, but I think an air abrasive system will be needed. Hope to get mine up and running soon. Lizziebird
Wow, really nice fossil, though I agree with you, the head would be ideal! I'm more of a general rockhound than fossil hunter, and it's like getting a huge beautiful crystal.... with a chipped tip. Argh. Maybe next time!
