Missourian
What measures do you take to secure your collection from clumsy or malevolent hands? My 'top drawer' specimens are currently in a metal cabinet in the garage, but I'd like to eventually get something more secure. My biggest fear is having my collection tossed and scattered about during a break-in. Context is critical.
KansasFossilHunter
People breaking in often disregard these "rocks" and go for things like air compressors and such...
Missourian
The problem is that they will dump out these boxes and drawers of 'rocks' while looking for whatever. Context is critical.

Missourian
This reminded me of this thread: http://www.thefossil...net#entry324870 I think i vaguely remember reading that thread. I worry the most about intruders because it was merely a punk's momentary indifference that kept my collection from being damaged several years back. They didn't open the many neatly stacked boxes in the closet, but I could see where they stepped on them to get a look at the shelf above. I could visualize them opening and dumping every box to look for something valuable. For those with the big shark teeth, they may just take some because it's something they recognize. Context is critical.
Auspex
Keep them out in the first place with a home security system. Xiphactinus
If it's in your garage, a cheap motion detector light will go a long way. We have a home security system with a motion detector hooked to it in our fossil room.

sixgill pete
But, I also live in the country. not much in the way of B&E's here though they do occur occasionally. Also a Sheriffs Dept. that kicks but and takes names, not one of those sissy police dept's that considers criminals "rights" Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt behind the trailer, my desert Them red clay piles are heaven on earth I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt Patterson Hood; Drive-By Truckers May 2016 May 2012 Aug 2013, May 2016, Apr 2020 Oct 2022

smokeriderdon
.40 is my preference. I agree with the alarm system. As my collection is currently in storage due to lack of space, I dont have to worry about that. My worry is out coin collection, but thats what the safe is for. Down under fossil hunter
At my new job (I pretty much get paid to snoop around) I found a massive fire proof cash safe with 20 shelves. The company I work for have upgraded their security and have no need for it. Now I am just waiting to get a truck big enough to take it home.... SCORE!!! Can't have guns in Australia so I may have to nun-chuck any would be thieves. I got skills
