The earlier 2 volume set from 1910 is a different edition entirely; "North American Index Fossils" was subsequently replaced by "Index Fossils of North America".

The preface may have been written in 1943 but the first edition was printed in 1944.

I haven't read the whole thing yet (on the second book), but I'll suggest "Annals of the Former World" by John McPhee. A series of 5 nonfiction books about traveling the USA with geologists over the course 2 decades. It won a pulitzer prize.

So, seeing no "2nd printing" or "2nd edition" etc mine is likely a first edition? or maybe that page is missing?
