Very cool finds for a very hot desert! From the photos it looks like the ammonites are preserved as calcified molds. Can you also find ones with the shell still intact? Your mystery bivalve is definitely an oyster of some sort probably from the family Ostreidae.

Thanks Ludwigia. The majority of the ammonites I find are steinkerns. I think many shells were replaced with selenite or some other soft mineral. This allows for excellent endocasts to weather out, but few with any shell intact.

I read about such creatures on the Brazosport website.

Wow, that is a fossickers' paradise.. That 2nd one in post 26 looks like it will look great once prepped - can you just pop one side off clean with the right whack of the hammer or chisel, or do they need more careful prep? Either way it looks like a good'n.

The other benefit to less rain is less vegetation to cover up the rock outcrops! The only places up here are rivers and beaches and roadcut/development excavations.

Wrangellian, crackin' these nodules is merely a gamble. I have smacked 'em open clean (which is always awesome!), and have also broken them all to peices. In my experience, the finest, detailed specimens have weathered open naturally. I saved the nodule you are referring to for a run through a saw. I may just crack it for a bit of "show and tell".

I would not consider this specimen grotty by any means. The lackluster specimens of this species that I chose to slice, just fell apart in the process. This one seemed stable enough to cut and polish for display. I have chosen otherwise. I'm gonna whack it with a hammer and show the results.

The scientific term, I believe, is "Great Googly Moogly"; or "too cool for words" in layman's terms.
