Recommended Posts

Saturday I woke bright and early with the intentions of going to 3 collection spots in Pa. A road cut in Northern Pa., St Claire and Deer lake. Well needles to say I didnt make it to the latter two. although I will be going to deer lake Monday if anyone cares to join or is already planning a trip there.

Following this post are pictures from the trip I was able to take, hope you enjoy.

This portion of the post will be for the "Shells". ammonites, brachiopods, cephalopods, gastropods, etc..

post-8290-0-39684800-1378059104_thumb.jpg post-8290-0-91276200-1378059136_thumb.jpg post-8290-0-85974700-1378059152_thumb.jpg post-8290-0-14958600-1378059253_thumb.jpg some goniatites and Paleozygopleura

post-8290-0-37612200-1378059266_thumb.jpg And of course I will have to put trilos in here as well,

post-8290-0-68436700-1378059208_thumb.jpg post-8290-0-40986300-1378059183_thumb.jpg

half of a trilo in the nodule Thoracic segments looking "through" them

post-8290-0-09934900-1378059235_thumb.jpg

this one all I could think of is a portion of a crionid calyx, which looks like a bicycle seat.

post-8290-0-86880900-1378059682_thumb.jpg

and then of course theres the cephalopods, I can't tell you which ones they are. the largest one on the right measures approximately 6 1/2" tall

Im not sure about this one, just caught my eye when i was scanning for trilo bits, it appears to be like needles on a coral ppossibly? some type of plant material for sure...

post-8290-0-17370900-1378060170_thumb.jpg a whole lot of dipleura pieces, nothing complete :(

a "hash" plate of numerous crinoid columnals

Gosh, how fun it that! I wish there was some local areas I could get to around here to find such cool fossils. Mostly hard chalky silt stone with nothing in it. Hope you have as much luck on your other two locations...looking forward to pics.

Really cool finds! Assume these all came from the road cut (?). You certainly used the holiday to good advantage...

Nan found a coral impression at Deer Lake - her first one. We are still processing our Deer Lake finds. I have one more Deer Lake post which I'll try to put up tomorrow - I found a piece almost 2 feet long covered with shells. I took closeup photos to show washing, brushing and cleaning it, and some closeups, that will make a cool post I think.

I REALLY like the "needles" - looks a lot like something we might find at St. Clair. I found some pine cones at St. Clair last weekend that looked similar to these fossils, but didn't collect them since we had a short time and were focused on other things.

Well to continue with this forum, I went back to place one, then on to Deer Lake place two, while I passed St Claire after reading the latest about people leaving trash and blocking the roadways, very disappointing.

I am very glad I took the time to go to Deer Lake as I found some goodies!! I will however need help identifying what I have found.

from place one, I found a few really nice goodies as well...to start

post-8290-0-32184600-1378245367_thumb.jpg This one is an unknown to me, although it reminds me of like a butterfly shell

post-8290-0-91368500-1378245547_thumb.jpg A detailed, but broken :( dipleura cephalon

A few more from site one before I get to site two, Deer Lake

post-8290-0-85705600-1378246351_thumb.jpg Here is a well preserved dipleura pygidium, possibly more in the rock, not sure yet

post-8290-0-07527500-1378246588_thumb.jpg Here is a pair of cephalons and some other things mixed in

A nicely preserved trilobite, 3 views of the same specemine. asteropyginid

post-8290-0-60280500-1378247007_thumb.jpg A few Dipleura segments

Only a couple more to add then on to Deer Lake !!

post-8290-0-61660900-1378247199_thumb.jpg Brachiopods, gastropod, and bivalves...not sure what species any are

post-8290-0-31830200-1378247306_thumb.jpg A couple of crinoid columnals, there were too many to gather so I grabbed a few random ones

post-8290-0-55535200-1378247728_thumb.jpg Im not sure what the item is on the left, I can only assume its the internal structure of a crionoid column segment, then there is a dechenellid Pygidium, and a small rolled Calymene

Ok on to Deer Lake, keep in mind I was tired and very sunburned so I was not there as long as I would have liked to be, but I will be back there this weekend....if anyone is interested

post-8290-0-95306700-1378249098_thumb.jpg This is a grouping of clamshells, with pyrite infused into them, makes for a beautiful shiney display piece with colored lighting

post-8290-0-80942200-1378249166_thumb.jpg then I have a neat little imprint of crinoid columnals, just thought it was unusual enough to add to my collection

post-8290-0-55155200-1378249245_thumb.jpg heres a nice smaller enrolled Dipleura which is hopefully complete inside.. going to take some careful prep to see if its there. I dont have a picture of it but there is actually a second trilobite on the other side of the same rock!!

post-8290-0-83945800-1378249309_thumb.jpg And another roller Dipleura....

post-8290-0-17895500-1378249425_thumb.jpg Here are some nice detailed inner molds of some ...... anyone?

post-8290-0-47743100-1378249780_thumb.jpg And lastly here are some harder to find shells, at least for me they are, :P

I assume the bottom shells are orthonata undulata - we found lots at Deer Lake, very well articulated. Did you notice that the clams are really large and lots of well articulated examples? - however, finding a clam in a 385 year old rock that looks like a modern clam doesn't excite me much.

The Dipleuras are great - looks like you zoned in on them in a short period of time. I talked to someone last year who had a fully articulated crinoid blastoid from Deer Lake that was amazing. I prefer to collect shell assemblages on olive green shale for display although most of our trips we search hardest for Dipleura and the one from our recent trip (see my posting) is the most complete we've found so far.

The trilobites marked as possible calymenids are an asteropyginid cephalon and a dechenellid pygidium. The other mystery item marked in the photo as 'trilo cephalon?' is another dechenellid glabella and Monodechenella is attached for comparison. The partial pygidium posted above the glabella is also a dechenellid trilobite. Congrats on the jackpot of middle Devonian fossils!

Thanks! I am very anxious to get back out to the Chicago area. And I am looking forward to thanksgiving. I have developed an eye for trilobites, lol. I got to meet HiTekmastr and his wife at deer lake this weekend, was really nice meeting other members of TFF.

I had a chance to see "Snakebite's" recent trilobite finds when we met this Sunday at Deer Lake - I think there's a "fossil of the month" in there! He's really got the eye for trilobites! Nan and I learned a lot and also we shared some info on our Deer Lake excursions. Rob is a great guy and a terrific fossil finder!

Congratulations on some great finds. With finds like that I can see why you didn't make it to the other two sites that day. Looks like a great site for pleurodictyum, trilobites, and gastropods. The goniatite and the Paleozygopleura gastropod were especially sweet to behold.

It was really nice to meet other FF members, I enjoyed the time we had at deer lake together, and that little enrolled dipleura was a sheer coincidence to find. I will have to post more pictures to show how the trip finished up.

Thanks for the Ids on the Gastropods, I'm still learning the names because there are so many, lol. I will update the posts accordingly to show the names.
