Woehr's July 2013 Collecting Report

Uncle Siphuncle

Recommended Posts

Good variety this month - Texas, Wyoming, and Utah - Fossils and Artifacts - almost 500 photos

I'd have to say that the father/son Green River Formation experience was the highlight of the month. When you collect long enough, you cultivate friends with whom you eagerly share your best collecting experiences. For me, Robert Bowen is one of those guys, and this time we were on the receiving end at his commercial quarrying operation in the world famous 18 inch layer, known for its well preserved Eocene fish.

I usually don't take the time to shoot photos mid prep, but these fish were special enough for me to rethink that strategy. For my better fish, I included sequential prep photos to document the entire process. I also showed images detailing the process of mining the 18 inch layer. I hope you find these sequences to be informative.

Robert wasn't the only helpful friend that helped make this report happen. Several Forum members helped me to locate a few out of state collecting sites, and also assisted with a huge amount of fossil identification. So special thanks go out to PaleoNature, ebrocklds, Inyo, TrilobiteRuss, Plantguy, Inyo...I hope I didn't forget anyone!

For those interested, my report can be viewed at your leisure on the Brazosport Museum website using the following link:

Dan,

Thanks for the enjoyable read.

Spent the last hour and a half in fossil heaven, reading your report.

Awesome finds, trips and memories.

glad yall enjoyed. i'm relieved to have the july manifesto behind me. august and september reports will be mere footnotes in comparison....well, maybe not exactly. some great stuff came to hand with a few more hard pushes into the texas outback, some turning up new-to-me species. good mixes of variety, quality, quantity, and rarity. stay tuned.

Awesome report! Where do you find the time to put such comprehensive reports together? I especially liked the Pecan Gap Chalk shark/ray snout cartilage, the Green River insects and the mammoth teeth. When you find high concentrations of visible fossils in a block of matrix, like that block of Pecan Gap Chalk, do you ever try to break down the matrix block to look for micro shark and ray teeth?

I never cease to be amazed at the amount of territory you manage to cover within a short month! And on top of that finding the time to prepare such a mass of very fine finds! You've done a fantastic job on those fish! What a wall! Fantastic!

i have a cool job designing aftermarket and OEM A/C systems for classic cars, hot rods, supercars, and niche OEM vehicles. the management team is cool, and they seem happy with my designs and the rate they hit the market. i keep the entire plant flush with fossils, at least those interested. i gave away a ton of little Knightia last month.

marco - i do only a limited amount of work with micros, preferring to surface collect them at close range. i'll occasionally sample broken down or easily broken down marls and clays for micros, but i've never messed with bulk sampling as hard as pecan gap chalk. i like matrix that mixes into a 5 gallon bucket of slop in 5 minutes with water only, then screens easily and quickly down to 5% of its original volume with just a garden hose. call me lazy or spoiled, i'll answer to either!

oh, and during my "leisure time" lately, when not working, collecting or prepping, i've been "relaxing" by reflooring my entire house.

Amazing report, but one small quibble. Why the PDF? Bulky and kind of a pain to scroll thru, tons and tons of white space. Why don't you put your reports on a web page?

I really hate to complain, after you've done so much work, but it seems like it'd be an easy and major improvement, I really don't like pdfs.

Thanks!

B

Hi Blastoid

I let the museum configure the report however they want, and for whatever reason, they like to convert it to PDF. By posting on their website, I don't have to worry about security attacks, expense, or administration. At the same time, they like the extra web traffic, so its a good enough symbiotic relationship for me.

Dan

It is really great when the matrix breaks down easily. However, in some ways, I prefer matrix that is difficult to break down but can be broken down with effort and persistence. Those are the faunas that typically no one other than maybe some museum has really looked closely at the micros in them. People don't have the knowledge to break the matrix down or just aren't willing to spend the time for the small stuff. This is where you can find lots of new stuff. It is frustrating though at times for me when I can't identify some of what I am finding because the species just aren't written up anywhere. However I do prefer broken down matrix that does have a good concentration of micros as it can get pretty time consuming and very boring when you have to look through a ton of matrix for just a few specimens.

Dan great report, a little late with this post, lost my hard drive and everything back to 2011. The wall display is incredibly fantastic, brought into prospective the size of some of the fish------Tom

Yeah Tom, I enjoy our aquarium too. Doesn't need a filter, and I don't have to feed the fish. However I must admit to hanging them all up when the loving wifey was out of town for the weekend!

Dan, that 58MB's was well worth the wait. Your "aquarium" is quite spectacular! :) Great preparation. I am smitten with your nautiloids. Definitely on my bucket list. Looking forward to your next meanderings.
