Uncle Siphuncle
I took my loving wife out for a dip down section recently, making a fruitful stop in the Pecan Gap Formation ('bout 72 or 73 MYA). As we were walking and I was giving m'lady a site/formation primer, my radar went off and I picked up a piece of chalky float 20 seconds into our outing. It struck me as crabby. I've attached a field shot for your scrutiny. Later I did some light scribe prep, experience guiding a my hand as I gingerly probed around carapace nodes with which I was unfamiliar, reason being that Campanian crabs tend to be quite scarce in Texas, and this was my first. Later I circulated pics to a few crab experts, and a few possible genera came out in our exchanges....Opthalmoplax, Dromilites, Tehuacana, and Necrocarcinus. Whether it is a new species is still up in the air. Fun find no matter how it shakes out. Edited July 29, 2014 by danwoehr Grüße, Daniel A. Wöhr aus Südtexas "To the motivated go the spoils." Uncle Siphuncle
Another Pachydiscus followed by a Hemiaster echinoid and a gastropod thrown in for variety. Grüße, Daniel A. Wöhr aus Südtexas "To the motivated go the spoils."
Uncle Siphuncle
Farther down section, in the Austin Chalk, Santonian, about 84 MYA, we found a couple echinoids. The big one is a disheveled but rare Cardiaster, and the spatangoid is a Hemiaster. Now my wife has claimed a couple more sites as "hers"... Grüße, Daniel A.
