Foshunter
Spent a month in Texas this summer and had the chance to make three hunts, two with my son and one with Tera (Barefoot Girl). The creek trip was a long hike to the exposure with deep mud that tried to pull your shoes off. Folks that hunt the Sulphur know of the underlying shale that gets pulverized by water and rocks grinding away at it's surface. This stuff is like thick putty, some places well over a foot thick. After about an hour and a half reached the start of the Red Bed exposure, started finding Baculites. I have found them in the River before but never this long, some over 18 inches and a lot of them.My son found a nice complete Scaphite hippocrepis that had a fish tooth attached in the matrixPartial prep, think the other side will be the best. I found a nice Euthrephoceras dekay nautiloid that for a change didn't need any prep also the fossil god blessed me with a Menabites delawarnsisFound this unknow ammonite, it is very water worn but the keel was fairly good I don't have a clue as what this is, would appreciate any input as to ID. Also found this object (a what is it) in the last pic, any ideas? My son and best buddy gave me so much grief over my new fossil hunting hat, he said, you can wear it to hunt in but not in public HUH !!!. I think the young folks haven't realized how fragile use seasoned hunters are. It keeps the sun off and with a brim like that rain won't touch you and besides it make you look like Senior Fossil Bandit. It does take up a lot of room in the car but I like it, any opinions? Auspex
Glad to hear you can still embarrass your boy! I think it is a hat of distinction, the type that can only be worn by the worldly-wise (who don't care how they look). Oh, yeah; nice fossils! fossilized6s
Hey if it helps in the field, wear it. If it helps to get a few laughs, embarrass your son and make some fine memories, wear it with pride. Uncle Siphuncle
good times. you might compare your mystery ammo with australiella. it is of about the right age and has variable ornamentation including pronounced ventral horns in some specimens. i've only found one. Plantguy
Hey Tom, nice finds and great hat! I could use that as a life preserver in the peace...which is a very good thing with my being short and some of the holes to fall in out there! Tropical wave coming on shore tomorrow...just a wee bit of rain they say... Regards, Chris
