Geokristel
Hello! My daughter bought me a fossil for Christmas, however, she did not find out what it is or where it came from. Any leads will help. The jaw is 5". It is in sandstone. It was bought in San Antonio.
painshill
Hi Geokristel It's from Morocco and it's a Mosasaur "jaw". The teeth are genuine fossils, but not all from the same individual. The "jaw" is usually made from unrelated fragments of other bones (non-Mosasaur) that are pieced together. The assemblage is then glued into a "matrix" composed of glue and sand. Most fossil dealers have these kinds of composite assemblages. They have no real scientific value beyond the genuine teeth, but they make nice display pieces, paperweights, bookends etc. Enjoy it for what it is.
