Despite not having positive ID's on much of this I'll go ahead and post pics from my latest trip to the Mississippian of north central TN. If anyone recognizes anything feel free to tell me what it is. :D

first up is an unidentified camerate crinoid calyx....

This is the biggest crinoid stem Ive ever seen! I also have some of the cirri, which I'll have to glue back on (the cirri are bigger than the crinoid stems I have been finding in my area!)

I believe this to be a partially flattened Pustula alternata

This one may be Rhipidomella

This is a neat bryozoan..but I haven't found an id yet. I have much more of it, its a branching variety.

This one isnt a fossil..but yikes! I didnt know TN had giant millipedes!

This is the key to their success. :)

Nice finds Jim...the crinoid cup is really neat.

I would've freaked out if it was moving...thanks, other than the fact that its a camerate, iding it has been difficult

Sorry I can't help with id, Jim, but those crinoid finds are way cool!

thanks. Im fond of the green matrix/pink fossil combo from that spot

Its as big as one..but it has cirri (the smaller stem - like extensions that branch of of the main stem.) It will be clearer when I free it from the matrix and glue some of the cirri sections back on.

Well Done, Jim! :1-SlapHands_zpsbb015b76::fistbump:

The calyx in my last report has been identified as Alloprosallocrinus conicus ( thanks to Dr. William Ausich and Archimedes for helping me with this.)

  • 3 weeks later...

Heres a few from a couple weeks back from the same site as the previous finds..New Providence Shale and the Fort Payne Chert.

I'll start with the crinoids...neither of which is pristine..but for now they have a place in my collection.

this first one was found loose in the red mud that the Fort Payne breaks down into..its a little rough but the basic shape is preserved to some degree.

Agaricocrinus sp.

Heres another that comes from the New Providence Shale. The tegumen is partially dissarticulated and consists of the globular plate shown in the third pic.

Agaricocrinus sp.

To compare heres an earlier example that I found and have prepped out of the matrix, its complete as far as the calyx goes.

also Agaricocrinus sp.

I was using the air abrader on it, but stopped when I noticed the baking soda turning it dark. Not sure why it does that.

Heres was a first for me..

post-2953-0-13663400-1442003796_thumb.jpg

it either a single Lithostrotion or an Amplexus horn coral.

post-2953-0-55668500-1442004232_thumb.jpg

most likely Pustula alternata

Heres another, this time with the shell..

post-2953-0-37702300-1442004524_thumb.jpg

Pustula alternata

this is about the opposite of what I usually find..the shell without the internal mold!

Platyceras sp.

This was a neat little surprise..a trilo butt..not sure on the genus but the pygidium was decorated with bumps.

thats it for now..thanks for watching ;)

Jim, Very nice find and prep! How come I cant do either of those well! I managed to carry and then proceed to drop a box of Mazon Creek material yesterday. The junk stuff was untouched that I should have thrown out ages ago but I managed to bust one the good nodules in half and it looks like part of it exploded...some folks live right...Congrats on your beauty...Regards, Chris

Thanks Chris! Mother Nature did most of the prep though..I wanted to leave it on the matrix. Sorry to hear about your nodules..super glue to the rescue right?
