MrFerris
Hello everyone, My girls and I were fossil hunting in Painted George in California and found this in a mind mound. Can anyone help identify. It is huge, weighs about 100 lbs and about 24 inches across

Strepsodus
Hi. I think it's a piece of sandstone rather than a fossil. The brown/orange parts are probably due to Iron oxides. Daniel
DPS Ammonite
Welcome to the forum. It does look like an iron stained concretion in sandstone. The locality info might give us more clues. Where is Painted George in California? What is a "mind mound"? Mine or Mima ? My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. caldigger
I'm thinking he meant Painted Gorge and probably a mine mound. You've got to love auto correct! My impression is a concretion of sorts as well. Hope you didn't have to lug it too far.
