Thank you. I sort of figured that shortly after asking.

All of the others, being broken filler, do not exhibit the concave opposite the convex end.

This one segment must have been completely separated before becoming fossilized.

The only one I've found ..... out of over 100 of the others.

More likely after the fossilisation.

Wish I had orthocones in my back yard! Although... if my understanding is correct, I would probably find Eurypterids in mine... if I dug an ~20' deep hole in it.
