Some sort of dermal denticle? Florida

I had a few people look at it (including the head of collections at the Nat. History museum in Gainesville) and we were all stumped! Any ideas?

Fish skull piece with "tilly bone" type growth(?).

I doubt the shape is diagnostic. It looks like a worn fragment of a larger bone to me.
