Mahnmut
Ahoi, I just finished a model of Dunkleosteus the lazy way, because I don´t have that much time these days. Lazy way means: Skull is a bought model from kaiyodo dinotales, postcranial is a skeletal drawing by Scott Hartmann I modified slightly and printed on some transparent foil. Like the outcome. It is quite small though, only 15 cm, representing a meager 3m in my chosen scale. can anyone tell what the other two are? both recent species, one handmade after a photograph, the other 3d printed from ct data. As I don´t know if I can add tags after posting , I just added the ones I may put in this thread if I ever find the time to build them. After all my Whales, other marine Mammals , Birds and Reptiles I thought it would be nice if I could include some more Reptiles and "Amphibians" (?) If it crossed the border between land and sea, its likeness shall be built by me -some day. -Placodus -Cyamodus -Mastodonsaurus -Tiktaalik -Ichthyostega -Diplocaulus Aloha, J 10 Try to learn something about everything and everything about something Thomas Henry Huxley
Fossildude19
The larger of the two looks like a skeleton of a Mola mola, or Ocean Sunfish. Can't guess at the smaller one. Nice work, by the way. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Mahnmut
Hi Fossildude, Mola is correct, hint for the small one: its not the complete skeleton yet. Mahnmut
Nice one! Mine looks a tad skinny in comparison. Try to learn something about everything and everything about something Thomas Henry Huxley
Misha
The second looks like a hammer head shark to me, good job. Also, what material did you print that with? I am guessing it is a resin but I am not sure what kind.
Mahnmut
Thanks Misha, Hammerhead shark is right. Sphyrna mokarran. Wonderfully bizarre, isn´t it? i had it printed in uv hardening resin, that is nothing I would want to handle at home. But it looks just like cartilage Regrettably the available ct data didn´t contain the whole body, only the head. I am still pondering how to match the delicate detail of the print. At least for the first impression. Aloha J 1 Try to learn something about everything and everything about something Thomas Henry Huxley
DeepTimeIsotopes
That’s a great Dunkleosteus model! I’ve always had a soft spot for Dunkleosteus. 1 Each dot is 50,000,000 years: Hadean............Archean..............................Proterozoic.......................................Phanerozoic........... Mahnmut
Thanks! I think Dunkleosteus may have appreciated a soft spot, although looking at those jaws I doubt that he would have needed one Try to learn something about everything and everything about something Thomas Henry Huxley
Mahnmut
Ahoi, not really fishy, but most probably aquatic. After failing to build a digital model, I tried it with good old fimo. Skull and parts oft the pelvis and shoulder girdle of Mastodonsaurus. Its astonishing how massively built the front of this animal was in comparison to the hind quarters. Mahnmut
Hi again, I don´t like the pictures that much because they show all the little imperfections that don´t catch the eye as much in the original, simply because it is so small. But still, it´s coming along. Aloha J 4 Try to learn something about everything and everything about something Thomas Henry Huxley

ReptileTooth
Great sculpting skills! You really captured the mastodonsaurus skull in such small scale! Looking forward to see it finished. Mahnmut
But when the ribs are done, the rest is easy. Mahnmut
Jaws! I had some trouble to get a printable file for the mandibula out of the scan data, but here they are. Not printable in the nice cartilage-like translucent material of the maxilla, but still, jaws make it a shark. Getting a good foto of the translucent skull was not that easy, but on the other hand I like the look of the contrast-enhanced profile, looks somehow like an x-ray. Sphyrna moccaran. Mahnmut
Aloha. They are Sauropterygians, not fish, but as Placodontia is one of the tags I added to this thread -and I don´t want to open up to many threads- they go here. Two species in the making. They will be small even if I make them 1/10 scale (most of my aquatic models are 1/20). Curious how the printout will work. Mahnmut
Ahoi! Still not a fish. The parts inside the red lines are restored/fake. I do at least believe the rest is the real thing. Mahnmut
I thought I´d show some spine. That one is handmade the oldfashioned way. Looks not as good upclose as 3d-printed stuff, but somehow its more satisying. And in my experience it will look fine when its complete and painted. Mahnmut
Still not a fish, but nearly done. Most spinal osteoderms fell off again while attaching the rest. Jackson g
Great work on all of these models. I can't imagine the amount of patience and detail it would take to make them look so accurate.
Mahnmut
Thanks Jackson! To be honest I am not very patient. I´ll tell you my trick: Skeletons are so complex that they look nice even if the single bones are not sculpted with much detail. I just aim to get the proportions right. Here comes the next critter, that one is a little more detailed, still it looks better from a little further away. At first I built one in blender, but on the one hand printing it would have been relatively expensive, it being a solid piece, on the other hand sculpting it the old way was fun. Its fimo over aluminum foil, then a layer of cut paper for the scales, then acrylic paint on top. The ventral side is my fantasy, as I could only find references for the dorsal side. Who is it going to be? Aloha, J 4 Try to learn something about everything and everything about something Thomas Henry Huxley
