Carboniferous arachnid?

Strepsodus

Recommended Posts

I found this in West Yorkshire, UK recently in coal mining waste from the Pennine Lower Coal Measures formation (Westphalian A, upper Carboniferous).  On the rock, there are several plant fossils such as Neuropteris leaves, but also this fossil.  I am unsure whether this is the abdomen of an arachnid or insect, or just a plant fossil.  On one part of the fossil, there is what seems to be a faint imprint of a Neuropteris leaf.  However, this imprint seems to be from a different fossil which formed on top of the possible arachnid/insect.

Do you think this is indeed an arachnid/insect fossil or just a plant fragment?

Thanks,

Daniel

Looks like overlapping plants, to me. :headscratch:

I see what you're thinking, but the texture doesn't seem right for an  arthropod to me.

To me, it looks like a decorticated Sigillaria 'bark' impression.

I'm not sure - there are possibly two or three arthropod segments here (rotated from your last photo) - looks rather Arthropleura - like, partly overlain by something else.

Thanks for the replies.  If the photos are cropped a lot, there do seem to be many small dots like what are present on arthropleura fossils.

Just took another look at some eurypterid pieces. They are similar enough to sell me on the idea.
