Ptychodus04
@Randyw your prep station is looking like mine! Piles of partially prepped fossils and a bunch of debris!! I'm on a roll this week for breaking the styli on my scribes. Monday, I knocked my Micro the bench and broke the stylus. Saturday, I ran into the latch on my storage device with the back of my chair and my Aro hit the floor... second broken stylus in less than 7 days! This is getting expensive... Naw, this is one of the reasons I run so many different scribes. If one goes down, you're not dead in the water. Thankfully, most of my scribe work is with the ME9100. That stylus is so thick, I don't think I could break it if I tried. Randyw
Ive been prepping another leptauchenia for my collection. Its got some damage but I still think it’ll look nice in my collection… the top veiw is wetted downa bit to make the bone stand out better. Its got all 4 fangs and most of both zygomatic arches. Most of the damage is around the eye areas. The finder used a really hard putty to stabilize the breaks that im probably going to have to grind off. My engraver barely dents it.
Randyw
Unprepared oreodont material sure is getting hard to find now. They are all overpriced or too badly damaged for what people want for them. I wish i could find a better reliable source for them…

Randyw
Heres a comparison between a leptauchenia skull and a sespia natida skull…. the lepti is on the left the sespia is on the right.
Randyw
My last project I was working on before I had to stop for my surgery. It started out a a block of matrix with an exposed leg bone and some vertebrae. I found this in a box that had been packed away for decades. I forgot I even had it but I found it when cleaning out my garage.
Randyw
And heres as far as i got when I had to stop until I’m recovered. It ended being vertabra, leg bone, a couple ribs, and a foot bone. Once i finish it I’m going to make some clear plastic stands for it to display. Just need to decide if I want to display them in a more anitomical correct position or as they were found in the block. A few good hours work should finish them up. My bucket list is to someday prep a whole oredont skeleton!
Randyw
And my newest 5 skulls. Once I’m back on my feet I’ll have to see what they actually look like. When I get in my next skull I’ll post pictures of them too. I’m just waiting on a total for another oreodont skull and a rabbit skull from a different seller. This could be a good month!
Nimravis
Randy, Nice thread- here are some of mine pieces that I have to finish some day. I liked this next piece a lot because the brain cast was showing. The whole right side was missing, with the exception of an upper canine. The whole left side was encased in matrix and I was surprised how nice it was after I started exposing it. I need to continue on with this piece, like the others. Rhino lower jaws- Hyaenodon- not the greatest, but still cool. As with the others, work still needs to be done on it. 4
Randyw
@Nimravis wow! Great looking pieces! I’m jealous. Rhino and Hyaenodon are both on my bucket list. I think about half of mine still need finishing touches too! LOL!
Randyw
@Nimravis I have a similar skull except its the front portion of the skull that is missing the top. You gotta love how these things fossilize! Someday I think we should start a white river/ oligocene picture thread so everyone can post their pictures. I love seeing them! 3

Randyw
O.k. Started on the first speciman! Today i was just sorting through the rubble to see what was oreodont and what wasn’t oreodont. I got the major cracks consolidated and paraloid on the exposed bone to help consolidate it. It’s really really fractured and fragile. I think that’s as far as I can take it today. I need to let the paraloid do its job…. Seems to be a small piece of upper jaw and a section of lower jaw.

Randyw
Added 2 more skulls to my to be prepped pile in the last week. One ( on right) is a very fractured one that should be great fun to pice together. Its in a dust/mudstone? Mix. Biggest piece so far is the size of the end of my thumb. By the time i get dine with it I should literally know oreodont skulls inside and out! the second (on left) is in a harder very fractured matrix but i have high hopes for it!
Randyw
Heres how I’m handling the fragmented one. I’m doing it like an archeological dig. Seperating the fragments from the dust and placing them in approximate locations on a printed picture of the original pile. 1
ParkerPaleo
I like the harder matrix one much better! Good luck on the dust-o-dont!
