Planko
Hey Everyone, Went to NSR today. Had some good luck. Nice couple of calcite covered specimens. This bone has me stumped. I believe it was larger at one time as it appears broken. One of the larger bone pieces I have found that is not a vert. Two groups of pics due to size. Any ideas? Considering the size and how flat the bone is, I'd say this is a good candidate for a paddle bone from a marine reptile, either a plesiosaur or mosasaur. What seems a bit strange, though, is that in the photograph above there seems to be a bit of bone stuck to the right side of the fossil, that I wouldn't expect in an otherwise tapering paddle bone. But may be it could be that this is a mosasaur radius, as in certain species these have a flaring edge on the outside of the manus (below images for comparison are of Prognothodon spp.): 'There's nothing like millions of years of really frustrating trial and error to give a species moral fibre and, in some cases, backbone' -- Terry Pratchett
