Seriously though, nice assortment. What age do these fossil sponges come from?

Cheers.

This mailbox score was never intended to be a Christmas gift, but it ended up being just that. About a month ago, Tim @Fossildude19 kindly offered to send me package with some fish bits as we both have an affinity towards fossil fish. Fast forward a bit and it hastily arrived on Christmas Eve. I wrapped it nicely and placed it under the tree, not knowing just how much unwrapping I would be doing the next day. To keep a long story short-ish, it took me over an hour to unwrap, admire, and photograph everything! I had to take a lunch break halfway through to regain some energy. Just when I thought I was nearing the end there would be another layer of fossils! There are so many beautiful fossils here, some of which I've only dreamed of owning! I cannot begin to describe how full my heart is because of the generosity of Tim. Ok, enough yapping... here they are.

Looks pretty nice, but is this for sure a fossil? Apparently this species still lives today.

You know- you could be onto something. It is pretty perfect and being Moroccan it might be. I do have recent echinoids that are not filled with anything and it does look different, but your comment does give me a reason to take a pause on it, since it is so perfect. I will have to check it out again in the morning, but if it is recent, someone did a great job at it and I did get it for a cheap price. Thanks for the info and getting my mind thinking.

For the heck of it, I should buy another one and take all of the fill out and see what it left.

When I saw your pictures, I thought, "Oh, it’s well preserved". Then I found it very similar to the present species found on our coasts (edible sea urchins), up to the slightly greenish colour.

I’ve already recovered sea urchins online, which were filled with a kind of cement with pebbles when it was not visible in the photos...

This is one of my current Psammechinus miliaris. If periproctus and peristoma were removed and filled with a relatively liquid mixture of sand and plaster/cement, the same result would be achieved.

PsammechinusMiliaris-67.jpg.7326de395a815e57222e6b568f8ce590.jpg

For me too it seems to be a current filled with sediment to make believe in a fossil.

A nice BV Galeocerdo mayumbensis tooth, which rounds out my Tiger Shark evolutionary lineage chain...

A pretty hard-for-me to find Otodus mugodzharicus tooth, which rounds out my Megalodon evolutionary lineage chain...

And a great looking Otodus auriculatus tooth...
