Al Dente
Has Probolarina brevirostris Cooper been synonymized under the older P. salpinx (Dall)? The angle of repose may be fooling me, but the brachiopod looks like a variation of the former to me; however, I'm no expert on the subject by any means. Nevertheless, I would be interested in why P. salpinx. I don't know if P. salpinx is still valid, my references are old. Cooper describes P. brevirostris as having 16 costae, I don't see that many on Masonboro's example. On the examples that I have seen of P. brevirostis, the costae are very regular. Here is an illustration of Dall's drawing of P. salpinx and Cooper's Holotype of P. brevirostris:
masonboro37
Thank you Wm. Spillman and Al Dente about the little brach. It is a tiny one and so intact! I appreciate the holotype view Al Dente! Edited November 2, 2012 by masonboro37 Process of identification "mistakes create wisdom".
