felino96
Hi, i have a question...This is a real trilobite or a fake one? Thanks very much! We get the world we deserve.
Fossildude19
Due to the lack of apparent lenses on the eyes, and what appear to be air bubbles in the body, I think this may be a resin cast of a trilobite. Clearer pictures in bright sunlight would help to be sure. Taking pictures with that much shadow doesn't give us a good view of the fossil. Troodon
Yep I'm with Fossildude on this one. It lacks detail and lots of what appears to be air bubbles.
felino96
These are the photos that the guy who sell, give to me...Soo much question mark, I cant buy a possible fake... Thanks very much! We get the world we deserve.
prem
Even if it is real (which is doubtful), it would be so poorly prepped as to have no lenses on the eyes. If you PM me, I could point you to some legitimate dealers who I trust to sell genuine phacops-type trilobites. Fossildude19
I reversed the black and white in this new image. I still have doubts, as I can still see what appear to be air bubbles. But, even if I am wrong about it's authenticity, ... it is then, instead, a horribly prepared fossil. The eye facets are almost, if not completely missing. Unless you can get it for extremely cheap, like 1 Euro, or 2, I would completely pass on this one. Guguita2104
IMO, it's a fake or a restored one for the reasons that have already been presented.
prem
I'm going to go with real, but very poorly prepped...it would be hard to duplicate the look of fossil shell hiding behind clingy matrix except with a very clever paint job. I also think I see a lens or two in the eye region that somehow survived this dog-awful prep job. Whenever I see a trilo like this, I think of a slight rewording of the immortal words of Count Rugen in The Princess Bride: "You must be that little trilobite preserved in those rocks all those years ago. You've survived all those eons encased in the rock only to be destroyed now [by poor preparation]? I think that's about the worst thing I've ever heard." You can look on Our Favorite Auction SiteTM right now and see an Erbenochile with its lenses mostly blasted away...it is the most awful travesty of poor prep. felino96, I would recommend shopping for your trilobite elsewhere. ---Prem
caldigger
The second picture sent you looks like it has been rubbed with black shoe polish (a common practice on Moroccan trilos) to cover any flaws that may have been visible otherwise. FossilDAWG
I agree with the others, fake or not you can do better than this poor mangled trilobite. Good luck! Don
