Hi, out hunting yesterday and found this beauty in a chunk of shale, also found a small one at a different location, seems to be a very nice specimen, do you think I should leave the layer of shale on it or gently use the scribe to remove it ? I'm thinking remove as you wouldn't be able to appreciate it fully until you can see detail, thanks.

That decision is completely up to you, nice finds by the way!

Happy hunting,

If the shale comes off easily, I would.  If the shale has to be worn off, i dont think i would?

Think I will go with the toothpicks for now, don't want to damage it, one day an Ichthyosaur skull will be mine... thanks.

I would use cuticle sticks (borrowed from the wife) they are easier to handle than toothpicks, but nothing metal.
