That's good. (Must not be very good glue in the usual sense, if it pops off that easily!)

It works fairly good.  I do use superglue for some stuff, but elmers glue is nice, because you can erase your mistakes by soaking in water and trying again.

Yes, I've noticed that about white glue generally, but have found it too stubborn when dealing with specimens more delicate/crumbly than Mazon nodules. On the other hand it seems to glue some things better than the more-recommended Paraloid/etc.

Just have a few buckets out freezing and the cold temperature, 16 degrees right now will hopefully do the trick.

  • 1 month later...

Since it has been a while, I figured I would touch base on this thread.

I still have buckets freezing outside and will not check on them until it warms up. I also have a few concretions in my freezer and will periodically thaw them out to see if anything pops.

For the last several I have been going through concretions that I have opened or found open in the field.

F555CB4F-AA3B-4A2C-91B4-6E44BDB051FC.thumb.jpeg.eabf80a0d24ab9a0b7965d59199da4ab.jpeg

If I come across pieces that I like, I will mount them on thick pieces of poster type , board that I buy from Hobby Lobby. I use Elmer’s Glue to secure them to the board. The pieces are easy to remove if I decide to do that and any residue can be washed off. An example is shown below.

BF356CF1-BA8E-44D9-92AD-F711E02DD100.thumb.jpeg.99fd21dc5444475118517c30ead82d30.jpeg

I have been mounting a lot of pieces and work on this project almost every night. I then place them into plastic storage containers. I find it easier to deal with Mazon Creek fossils by mounting them, the pieces are easier to see versus keeping them rubber banded together. Lastly, due to the amount of MC fossils that I have, I do not have the room or drawers to display them any other way.

While going through this pieces I also separate out the pieces that I will take to the ESCONI Braceville Shaft Mine Fossil Trip that is held twice a year. I bring buckets of fossil and dump them out for the participants to go through. I have a couple of buckets of MC fossils right now and as I continue on there should be more. Here is a pic of some of the stuff that will be dumped if a trip happens this year.

I also bring along other fossils that I have collected, these include thing such as fossil shells from Florida, cephalopods from Graf, Iowa and many Mississippian and Ordovician hash plates. It is a great way to get rid of things that I do not need.

What method do you use for logging all the fossils? I noticed the AFP4 in the top corner.

I do not log anything, that AFP4 designation is where I found it- Across From Pit 4. If I know the exact date that I found it, I will write that in the upper right hand corner. In the beginning I use to assign a number to them, but as my collection grew I stopped.

Makes sense.  I am sure that would be quite tedious after cracking open thousands of these concretions.

Yes it would be. My fossil mentor use to catalog every fossil that he had, and he had a lot.

I was mounting some pieces tonight and I came across this little piece that was found weathered open. If I am correct with my ID, it is a Neuropteris fimbriata, I believe my first example. According to Jack Wittry’s @fiddlehead newest book, “A Comprehensive Guide to the Fossil Flora of Mazon Creek”, it is uncommon.

Awesome fish scale!   I stopped at a farm stand next to that locality last fall.  Bought some pepper jelly and dreamt about what might be under my feet!

  • 3 weeks later...

Here is a cool piece that I remounted tonight. I collected this concretion on 5-30-1998 at the site I call “Across from Pit 4”. Though I have found many concretions with multiple Myalinella meeki inside, this one with 3 M. meeki, reminds me of cars stuck on a highway in rush hour.

The detail venation on this Macroneuropteris from Pit 4 is really stunning and 3 dimensional.

Nice ones, they just keep coming (not surprising after so many years of collecting I guess). That is a huge fish scale - it dwarfs the 1/2" examples I have found in my local Cretaceous which I thought were on the large side.

Love the other things too.

I agree about the size, I have a number of nice size fish scales from this site, hopefully others will pop from the concretions that I still have.

I have to have s look at the ones I have out.  I have some under some mulch getting some weathering this winter.

I just finished tapping some concretions in one of the buckets that I was freezing over the Winter. Yesterday, due to the temperature outside, I only tapped a few that I saw cracks in. Below are the things that opened tonight, hopefully the other buckets will also have some that pop open.
