Ok, a little help! Sorting to see what is worth shipping home and see this. What is it? Found during Briggs dig. Size is approximately .5cm

The star shape is a crinoid columnal; I don't know what species. The brachiopod at lower left looks like Devonochonetes coronatus.

While crinoid columnals are common at most NY Devonian sites, they're not common at DSR, and the pentagonal ones are less common than circular. I've found a few circular ones at DSR, but I don't remember finding any pentagonal ones.

Cool piece!

Both Deb and I received some Elrathia kingii from @JamesAndTheFossilPeach who recently came back from Utah (thanks, James!). I also pocketed these two belemnites and a nice high-spired gastropod (I'm suspecting it is Miocene) from @Jeffrey P's box of glorious loot.

IMG_5881.JPG

The turritella internal mold is from the Paleocene Aquia Formation from Purse State Park, Potomac River, Maryland. The belemnites are Upper Cretaceous Navesink Formation from Big Brook, New Jersey.

I agree that it is a crinoid stem segment. Crinoids are uncommon at Briggs and DSR and the star-shaped ones are even rarer. Nice find!

Heres a couple DSR finds I think are worth sharing. I did find 1 complete greenops that I was pretty happy about. I also managed a dipleura cephalon and some nice plant/wood debris that was kinda unique so I kept them.

Here is the greenops from DSR.

I have just a couple more photos to share.

Last 3 photos are some interesting plant fragments and the dipleura cephalon. I collected a handful of brachs and a complete goniatite similar to the one Tim found so I won’t duplicate the picture. DSR is very diverse!

Ive found mostly uninteresting plant fragments at DSR but these had some branching and I thought it was cool.

The small dipleura cephalon. Ok I’m done sharing.

Lets see see other people’s highlights of the day!! :)

That was my first thought but I've never found a non-round one or one that had the star shaped inside. Thanks

Lol.  Just trying to be respectful of people's internet privacy.  With all the crazies out there, and face recognition software, it's probably a good idea to get permission before posting someone's image and identity.

Looking up an older thread I once started to ask for IDs of crinoid stems, I found the name for your star: Thylacocrinus clarkei

Here are pics of my Dipleura find. Head is tucked under but all there. Body length (minus head) is approximately 1.75 inches (no ruler handy as I packed up)

Here are a few other finds. I'm hoping the single greenops is complete just buried. All my finds are being shipped to home except for Dilpurea so I can be sure it survives. All these are my better DSR finds. Briggs rd will be next.

Sweet! I love that crinoid; it looks like you have a calyx under that matrix!

The brachiopod at the upper middle of your top photo is (I think; I could be wrong) Rhyssochonetes aurora. There may be some hinge spines under the matrix for the side with shell material.

Good pieces, all!

I agree. That sure would have made my day, had I had a day. I'm happy for you all. Wish I were there. Next time. I'll bring the cookies.

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

We missed both of you out there, Mike. But  I know it wouldn't have been enjoyable for you out there.

We'll get out there again in better weather. :)
