M&M Ranch in Nebraska

I am with you Marco, the micro stuff is great.

I actually burnt myself out searching the anthill matrix from the ranch and went back to searching marine matrix from Virginia.  I haven't looked at any matrix from the ranch in over a year.  However, I pretty much sent all of the micro specimens from the ranch to different researchers and I have donated all of these specimens to different museums.  I have very few micro specimens left now in my personal collection (Some micro specimens on the top and right along with specimens that I found surface collecting in the ranch in the below picture), so I really do need to get some more anthill matrix this year to build back my own collection.

  • 1 month later...

My older son, Marco Jr.,  just posted on Facebook a picture (see below) of some of the specimens that he has collected on his M&M Ranch in Nebraska which I'm sharing here on TFF.

Those are some amazing skulls and teeth!

Marco Jr. has a large number of skulls still in jackets that need to be prepped.  Although I really like his saber cat skulls, my favorite skull is his Archaeotherium skull in the middle/back of the picture.

Amazing stuff! I have not yet hunted the Oligocene and hope to correct that situation soon. :)

Cheers.

I had hoped to find a nice little tortoise on the ranch that would be easy to dig out and easy to prep.  However, I found this monster in the picture below.  It took my sons and I half a day just to dig it out.  We got a 4 wheel drive, off-road truck as close to it as we could but it was still extremely hard with four of us to get it into the truck.  It still isn't fully prepped.

All that was exposed is circled in red in the below picture.  The ranch has lots of tortoises.  However if you don't find them right as they start to expose like this one, the weather explodes them into hundreds of pieces very quickly.

There are nice Eocene and Oligocene badlands exposures in the north western part of Nebraska where the M&M Ranch is located.  What time-frame exposures are in eastern Nebraska?

If I’m not mistaken most of the exposed area around me is Pennsylvanian.

If you own or have access to private ranches in the Eocene and/or Oligocene badlands in Wyoming, Nebraska, and South Dakota, it is truly amazing what is exposing every day that you can collect.  Unfortunately most of these badlands are government managed by BLM or the Forestry Department and collecting vertebrates is only allowed with government permits.

I really like both the Eocene and the Oligocene.  Eocene marine formations in Virginia and Oligocene terrestrial formations on my sons' Nebraska ranch are my favorites for collecting.

My younger son Mel moved to South Dakota in November 2018.  He is trying to line up several dinosaur ranch leases.  I'm really looking forward to what he will be finding on those ranches.

Yeah, ive known this for a long time.  I wont get started on what I think of BLM and others on the protection of fossils.  I let Frank Garcia do that for me.  :)

Frank is a longtime family friend.  My sons were able to purchase the M&M Ranch (formerly the badlands portion of the Arner Ranch) using an option to buy that Frank had in his fossil lease with Milton Arner on the Arner Ranch.

If you did want to go to the ranch the below link will get you to a website about the ranch.  I believe that the last trip for this year is already fully booked.  In order to properly steward the land, my sons only allow access to a limited number of people for a few collecting trips each year.
