I spent a few hours on Sunday afternoon visiting the Windmill Site. The windmill itself is perched atop the Juana Lopez member of the Mancos shale.

A marker for this strata is Cameleolopha Lugubris...

...if you are finding this common little oyster, you are definitely in the Juana Lopez. Also common in this outcrop are the teeth of Ptychodus Whipplei, though on a rare occasion, you may find these...

...the pharyngeal teeth of the large pycnodont, Macropycnodon sp.

...the ammonites of the Juana Lopez are not nearly as plentiful as other outcrops, but they are indeed there. Here is a large, crushed and poorly preserved Coilopoceras Inflatum...

...below the Juana Lopez is the Carlile Shale. A common ammonite in this strata is Spathites Puercoensis...

...and can be found in two forms, termed gracile and robust (or skinny and fat :) )...

Once again...back to the Puerco...

...well, not exactly. I decided to first visit the Menefee formation...

...to explore the badlands for some dinosaurs.

None.

The cactus were in bloom...

Hey Roger. There is indeed a lot of land to choose from...maps and literature have been a huge help in picking where to go. This new spot is not a very big area, but it definitely demands some attention. Have fun in the Wutach...or the ditch. :)
