Thanks Marco. I often end up with a handful of pieces...I just got very lucky with this one. There was no visible fossil on the outside of the nodule. I just picked it up and cracked it. After eight years of collecting ammonites, this is the first with such beautifully preserved and intact shell. I am quite giddy about the whole thing. :)

...and with that, we packed up our treasures and hiked 'em back to the truck.

We pondered heading back to the same outcrop but settled on a new spot. This next spot was dubbed "shark tooth hill" by an old friend. I had not been there in a while so off we went.

...upon arriving, I headed straight to the sandstone lens that had produced so many teeth in the past. Though not nearly as productive, it continues to reveal it's contents.

While Pilolobus scanned a quiet ant hill for small teeth...

...I wandered near by, finding this small but very exciting vertebra...

...which may indeed be my first marine reptile find! My study on this subject is very limited so I cannot tell you the owner. Fortunately, I have a new research goal. :)

Due to the lack of teeth at the site, we packed up and headed to explore one last wash before the expected rain.

This wash did not disappoint. As soon as I hiked in, I found this large Romaniceras mexicanum in a concretion...

...I will have to make a return trip with a cart to get it. I wanted to show Pilolobus this find. I hiked out to tell him about the ammonite in the wash...he wanted to see it. As we hiked back into the wash, I looked to my left to see this monster!...

By no means! At least for me it's always nice to view this wonderful landscape each time from a slightly new perspective. Just curious: Have you developed a particular system of search, marking the ground you've already covered as you go? Do you systematically pinpoint all of your finds for future reference? It seems to me that the Puerco is geographically a very large area to cover, so I could imagine it may be easy to lose track of exactly where you were. Do you use GPS?

If that was me, I'd be back there asap with a shovel, prybar and sledge hammer. Nothing ventured, nothing gained :ninja:

I know I would be back there with some sort of device to carry that big one out too... but maybe I am just greedy. Of course prepping it would be a much bigger job I imagine..

You are one busy guy, anyway! Place seems to be loaded.

Thanks Roger. For documentation, I use a combination of topographic maps, satellite imagery and GPS coordinates. This is a large area, but for the most part is "boxed" in by reservations. Over the years, I have worked my way North, scouring the entire Carlile outcrop that is exposed on BLM land. I am now in the process of working my way South...time to look at the outcrop all over again! :D

I wish I had a tractor...it would look really good in the front yard. :)
