No customs duty on fossils unless the *CN22 was ambiguously filled out by the exporter. I’ve said several times on the forum it’s in your interest that the exporter is accurate with the CN22. If it was you can challenge that Post office I think have forms. It should be commodity code 9705000030 It must have been VAT you’ve been charged for Bobby. Rather annoyingly VAT is not only charged own the value of the item declared but on top of customs duty (if eligible) AND shipping costs. I would recommend a lower value on the CN22 as the value is subjective unlike say a new car. A low value doesn’t mean the item(s) can’t be insured at a higher rate as the item could have a higher value to the receiving party than an actual monetary value.

The post office charge you around £12 for relieving you of the customs duty on the shipping costs is totally unreasonable as it costs the a mass produced red postcard, a first class stamp and 30 seconds of their time.

So, an example.

This is a very simplistic example and the values/duty/VAT depends on the amount the item is worth before it kicks in (think personal income tax allowance) and whether it’s a gift. So you recieve an accurately filled out CN22 for a fossil valued at £75. The shipping was £25. There is no duty (fossils!) but you will have to pay £20 VAT on the £75 + £25. Add the £12 odd the post office charge and your bill will be £132. The label stuck on the parcel will tell you the amount of duty separate from VAT.

With my my own business I ship and import worldwide. I also know a retired customs office of some rank.

*Note if over a certain declared value value a CN23 rather than a CN22 will need to be used.

Wait isn't it supposed to be "secret" Santa in that you don't know who sent your package?

I always heard it was "secret" because You did not know Who was going to give a gift to You. Never heard that it made any difference after the fact.:headscratch:

With most of these, the post code/ zip code or country will rather give it away, anyway.

The one I run on the Tortoise Forum is called TORTOISE :  Totally Obvious Really, The Origin Is Sure Enough.

But it's about the fun, and giving and receiving, and you don't know who until it arrives, at least.

Then we post photos and laugh and share our enjoyment, proud of what we've sent and grateful for what we've been given. :)

Perhaps here it could be called FOSSIL, Fairly Obvious Santa, Still It's Lovely! :D

One of the problems with international “secret” Santa’s...name and address  requirement on customs forms haha

I think that gives away quite a bit...well that and the little hints dropped here and there.

I agree with not knowing who got your name until you receive the gift being the “secret” aspect :D

Glad to see it finally made it.  Sorry for the sloppy label writing, I can hardly hold a pen anymore.

Hi Max!

Only one of the two boxes I sent out has arrived and has been opened up so far, so you're not the only one who is playing the waiting game...

I hope that your package arrives soon!!!

Ok, good to know that I am not that there a few others in the same position as me. :)

By the way, I'm pretty sure that the package I sent should have arrived by now. If not, it should be there at the latest this week. (I sent it November 19th, and it takes 5-12 workdays to arrive).

I think life just sometimes gets in the way, when it comes to posting pics on the Secret Santa. I sent my package out on 11-16-17 and even with Priority it did not get delivered until 11-20-17, but I have still have not seen anything posted. I just hope the person who received my goodies, like them- fingers crossed.

Well, it happened ... Santa arrived and my kids were as excited as I was !  It did also happen that they plundered most of the spoils .. my son is partial to any kind of crystal or rock and my 2.5 year old daughter has taken to anything sparkly as well.  It was a nice gift to share.

Thanks,

Brett

Mine should have arrived at its destination a long time ago, I’m thinking about sending a PM to them soon to see if they got it.
