I had a hunch that my Secret Santa package has arrived - and I was right !!!

My Secret Santa comes from Canada and he has sent me a fantastic collection of Canadian fossils - I love them and I'm really grateful to Santa, because so far my Canadian collection comprised only two trilobites and now I have so much cool stuff :D

Here is what I got:

Eeeeek!!!! I received my Secret Santa gift this afternoon and I will say that I am incredibly grateful for everything!  Everything is so unbelievably awesome and I’m completely gobstruck!  It’s so hard to choose a favourite piece but I will say that eoderoceras is simply stunning!

I am blessed and honoured to receive the handmade card!  Someone has an insanely talented wife   My 3 year old has continuously tried to liberate it from the box...claims it needs to be on her shelf.

Thank you so incredibly much!!

Awwww You’re spending Christmas in my hometown.  I miss good ol’ KW although I likely wouldn’t even recognize it.  Going back in the summer though :)

Let me know when you're back in my neck o' the woods next summer - perhaps we can go fossil-hunting together with the kids :)

What lovely photos of Viola Monica. :dinothumb:

Thanks for all of the compliments re: my photos, but it's easy to take nice pictures of Viola - taking pictures of my son is another story... (he currently hates having his picture taken!)

Glad she likes it.  The small rock with two flexis on  it and the brachiopods and gastropods are personal finds.

Dom - Viola doesn't just like it - she LOVES it!!!  Thanks again!!!

That’s a bloke thing. Unless you’re called Narcissus of course.

Oh, my son William is most definitely not like Narcissus - he's a beautiful child (I know that all moms say that about their kids - but it's true!!!) but he couldn't care less about how he looks (so far at least!)

Wasn’t insinuating at all William is narcissistic, only that males seem to prefer not to be photographed in my experience of being a photographer of 30+ years. :)

Has #13 and his buddies shown up yet?  Another package to the same general vicinity which was sent at the same time was received a few days ago.  Maybe the customs clowns are finally holding onto something this year.

Was going to pick up my parcel today, but it's the Prophet's birthday so it's closed.

Tomorrow is the donkey's birthday, so he has a day off.

Sunday it's always closed, however much i complain about it.

Monday, hopefully.:D

My is friend in NY is really a random fellow. He may have got us a really amazing Christmas  present or  even more likely  one of his friends Carole pottery master pieces . So bad they are funny, they make herself laugh .  We got 20day to pay for it , so when we given in to our consciences we pay the £41 and hope for the best.

No customs duty on fossils unless the *CN22 was ambiguously filled out by the exporter. I’ve said several times on the forum it’s in your interest that the exporter is accurate with the CN22. If it was you can challenge that Post office I think have forms. It should be commodity code 9705000030 It must have been VAT you’ve been charged for Bobby. Rather annoyingly VAT is not only charged own the value of the item declared but on top of customs duty (if eligible) AND shipping costs. I would recommend a lower value on the CN22 as the value is subjective unlike say a new car. A low value doesn’t mean the item(s) can’t be insured at a higher rate as the item could have a higher value to the receiving party than an actual monetary value.

The post office charge you around £12 for relieving you of the customs duty on the shipping costs is totally unreasonable as it costs the a mass produced red postcard, a first class stamp and 30 seconds of their time.

So, an example.

This is a very simplistic example and the values/duty/VAT depends on the amount the item is worth before it kicks in (think personal income tax allowance) and whether it’s a gift. So you recieve an accurately filled out CN22 for a fossil valued at £75. The shipping was £25. There is no duty (fossils!) but you will have to pay £20 VAT on the £75 + £25. Add the £12 odd the post office charge and your bill will be £132. The label stuck on the parcel will tell you the amount of duty separate from VAT.

With my my own business I ship and import worldwide. I also know a retired customs office of some rank.

*Note if over a certain declared value value a CN23 rather than a CN22 will need to be used.
