I ordered some of these amber insects from the same dealer who sent them in the same type of box, and after a little while the plastic started to cloud up around the spots in contact with the amber. I don't know what kind of chemical reaction that was, but... fair warning!  Rather disappointing, as I thought it was a nice way to display them too. I ended up putting all my amber bits in small ziplocs. The display box makes a neat little drum, it's very resonant when you trap it with your fingers  :P

@Wrangellian

Was there any damage to the Amber itself ??

Not that I can see.

Phew.

I have loads of small zip lock bags (once again, thanks to the home covid tests).

Will take all my Amber out of those floating riker mounts and put them in those.

Though the amber seems to be unaffected, I figured that was the safest course of action. I don't know what kind of reaction it was or what exactly triggered it, but chalk it up to poor (non-archival) materials in the mount.

Probably a good idea if I take them out.

@Wrangellian,

I contacted the seller and asked about the discoloration of the plastic.

This was his response

Rest assured that the plastic film is safe,and because we keep ambers by baby oil or olive oil,so if you not clean them,they will make the plastic film been discolour and cloudy,because the oil evaporated and bsorbed by plastic film:)

Baby oil!  I wonder if the amber really needs any kind of oil or will it disintegrate without it... Never heard of treating amber with anything.

Anyway I guess that explains it, except the deposit (if that's what it is) on the plastic is impossible to wipe of with the finger.

I’m not believing this one. I’ve got floating displays that had fossils that I split and put the halves  in 2 different displays and one will fog and the other not. I also believe the film is to blame…

I’ve heard of using oil on amber to help prevent surface crazing but if it’s properly stored I’ve never had a problem with it. Remember to keep amber out of huge temperature fluctuations and direct sunlight…

  • 2 weeks later...

This afternoon I was in the neighbourhood of the antique shop (that also sells fossils) where this journey began for me

So I popped in to have a look

Came home with this:

Fossil wood - Araucaria

Arizona, USA

Triassic

About the size of my hand
