M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy On the downward pointing arm to the right, note the two bright stars. The larger, brighter is a supernova, SN2023ixf, discovered this month by an amateur astronomer, Koichi Itagaki. This "cosmic explosion" is the result of a massive star collapsing in on itself. The pinwheel is approx. 21 million light years from Earth; so it took a while for us to learn of the bang.

The image of the pinwheel galaxy was snapped to try and capture the supernova (SN2023ixf) that emerged on May 19th.

Coco, The image above was made with a Nikon D600 DSLR. A Nikkor 200-500mm zoom lens was attached, set at maximum zoom. Even with the long telephoto lens, the final image is cropped a great deal from the original frame. I have an inexpensive solar filter (short cardboard tube faced with a very dark solar film). It is a left-over from the time of the last major solar eclipse. A filter of this type is essential to protect the camera's sensor and the operator's eyes. I utilize the "shutter priority" setting of the camera and snap 4 or 5 photos, changing the shutter speed in succession. It seems that the same speeds I use when photographing the full Moon are useful (approx. 1/360 sec to 1/800 sec). I then select the best exposure from the group of RAW files and process that pick in Photoshop Elements to produce the final image. Thank you for your interest. Photographing the Sun is not as technically difficult as getting good Moon images, however, the safety precautions needed add steps to the process.

I had a similar view last night while at work, but to get a good pic would have required not only a camera, but a tripod as well. And since I work the graveyard shift in a hotel, showing up for work with a camera AND tripod would generate a lot of questions....

This single exposure shows a good example of airglow. Utah's dry high mountain desert climate produces some amazing airglow. Green is predominant with red or magenta and sometimes a yellowish color.  It often is banding with red and green constantly moving but unseen except for the camera sensor.
