What Is Your Favorite Fossil?

Note for Hybotus: Back on page 7 of this there was a discussion of where Edestus species were found and I found where they were discovered in Eastern Kansas. Here is an abstract http://www.oceansofkansas.com/KAS2004.html (its about 3/4 down the first author is Hamm)

For one species to mourn the death of another is a new thing under the sun.

Here is my favorite. I got it in the early 80's from a guy who collected in pit 11 before the power plant was built.

Superb detail!

When I hit the lottery, another theme I'm going to collect is "enigmas".

What could be better than a case full of things noone in science can fully explain?

This is the nicest example of Edestus heinrichi that I think I have ever seen in someone's private collection. Without checking my literature sources (too lazy) I seem to recall that many (all ?) of these teeth come from a coal mine in Illinois. I have also seen another species (very small) reportedly from the Ace Hill Shale of Nebraska.

Do Forum members know of other US locations of E. heinrichi?

Marcel: What was the location of the large Edestus you posted?

We certainly see some wonderful shark teeth posted on the Forum!!!

is this one at least modestly alright then?

(there is another tooth hiding behind the pyrite)

all kidding aside, could anyone suggest some further reading on e. heinrichi? I can find next to nothing on this little monster on the web.

TIA!

Ive never noticed this thread before, superb fossils everyone !!!!..... and its such a hard choice.....My favourate is always usually my latest find, but I used to take my dad collecting on occasion and he always found something good..... Then!..... let me look after it for him.... One of these times he found an unidentified insect wing showing some colour pigment....I value this the most I think.....
