Lately I have been really interested in the Maotianshan shales and the incredible fossils preserved in them.

This is a chengjiang fossil worm from the Early Cambrian, it is a partial and I don't have an exact ID for the fossil. But either way the detail preserved is amazing.

I saw that one and was tempted. I've already got an example from that same formation but I think yours is better. It goes right down to the tip.

Cricocosmia jinningensis. Palaeoscolecid worms can be difficult to distinguish, but the sclerites along the trunk are indicative of Cricocosmia.

Today I received a package from forum member @siteseer. I had purchased a nice Hexanchus agassiz I tooth from him. Once again a forum member has went above and beyond. Jess did tell me that he would send me some extra Sharktooth Hill teeth. I was not expecting all of the wonderful goodies that were in that package. While I don't have time to take nice pics of all individual teeth here is a pic of everything together.

Acquired this Redlichia chinensis recently, from the usual venue... all I know is it's from the Lower Cambrian of Hunan province, China. If anyone has any more specific location/stratigraphic info I'd appreciate knowing it!

Now this is not a mailbox score per se, but was given to me by one of the members of our rockhound club, who had a few pieces and could spare one. Piece of Rhynie chert from Scotland. This stuff has been on my wishlist for some time, so now I can cross it off!

The early-land-plant-bearing Rhynie chert was discovered in the early 20th century, and apparently it's not an impressive outcrop - just a small field with a trench dug in it. Lower Devonian (Pragian). The rough surface is not very pretty either, but you can make out what look like stems. Too bad someone had to write 'rhynie chert' in jiffy-marker on it, but if that saved it from being unrecognized, mixed up with other stuff and lost, then it's fine! Next step is to get the sliced surface polished. I have wetted it for this pic.

I have a soft spot for Mazon Creek plants.

Here is my latest addition.

Only 1/2 the nodules, but wasn't too expensive so I added them to the collection.

Nice concretions. Plant material (fern fronds) often preserve with lots of nice detail so it is easy to see at a glance what they are. Mazon Creek concretions of soft bodied animals like the jellyfish Essexella asherae often require strong side lighting, squinting, and some imagination to see. I have a number of half concretions in my limited collection which were found already split by the natural freeze-thaw cycling of the seasons (which we attempt to reproduce with buckets of water and a shelf in our freezers). Quite often one half of the concretion can be found eroded out and lying on the surface with the other half nowhere in sight. I remember collecting a nice half concretion and finding out when I got home and washed the mud off my finds that I had also collected the matching half (likely further down the slope) in the same area.

Cheers.

-Ken
